A total of 51 prominent Chinese scientists have been elected CAS members in 2005. The announcement was made at a press conference held on Dec. 16 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the conference to give a briefing on the election and new members.

    CAS membership is the highest academic title and an honor of life tenure conferred by the State in science and technology circles in China. The election of CAS members is held biennially, and each time the total number of new members to be elected will not exceed 60, according to the Bylaws for CAS members. At present, CAS has a total of 707 members, with an average age of 72.

    The 51 new members were elected by a secret ballot from 295 valid candidates, who were nominated either by CAS members or departments for a preliminary election in their respective administrative systems. These departments include the commissions and ministries under the State Council, the organs, offices, institutions under its direct administration, State bureaux under the jurisdiction of the ministries or commissions, the China Association of Science and Technology, the four general departments under the People's Liberation Army, and the governments of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the State Council.

    Among the new CAS members, eight are mathematicians or physicists, nine chemists, 12 life scientists, seven geologists, six information scientists and nine engineers. The oldest of the newly elected is 72 years old and the youngest 39. Forty-seven percent of the newly elected are under the age of 60.
